This thesis examines development of Marian iconography in Byzantine art, specifically the appearance and development of new iconographic types of Mary and Child, such as Hodegetria, Eleousa and Nicopeia. Based on Byzantine examples, their transfer to Italian art and their influence on local artistic production will be outlined. The focus of the assignment is on the question what kind of influence this was, where was it most intense, how it was expressed in Italian sacred art and interpreted by local artists of 12th and 13th century.
