With the development of the latest systems and tools in the field of art ificial intelligence and the emphasis on the ethical issues it raises, a new concept has emerged in the literature. This is the concept of algorithmic violence. It refers to the development, use, and consequences of AI systems based on algorithms. Our aim in this paper will be to analyse and critically evaluate this notion. The conclusions will be mainly sceptical, but they carry significant implications for the field. It will be argued that while the term does, to some extent, highlight important ethical problems in the use of AI, these are much better characterized by other terms such as bias, discrimination, exclusion, stereotyping, marginalization, unfairness, non-transparency, etc. The use of the term algorithmic violence is thus not well founded and does not bring any part icular theoretical or practical advantages or benefits.
