Posttraumatic growth represents positive personal development that can occur as a result
of successfully confronting traumatic experiences. This master's thesis explores how
religious coping and spirituality contribute to this process and examines the role of the
Grief to Grace program in fostering post-traumatic growth. The program integrates
elements of spiritual exercises, group therapy, and therapeutic techniques to support
individuals in processing painful experiences. Participants are required to confront their
pain, experience it deeply, and understand it, which enables them to begin the healing
process. The program encourages them to recognize and express their emotions on a
deeper level through spiritual and therapeutic practices, thereby integrating traumatic
experiences into their life story.
The research is based on a qualitative phenomenological research approach and in-depth
interviews with participants of the program, providing insights into their experiences and
the process of trauma integration. A deeper understanding of the growth process in post-
traumatic integration was gained through five interviews with participants of the Grief to
Grace program. Positive changes were identified in areas such as self-esteem and mental
health, interpersonal relationships, and the relationship with a higher power or God.
Specifically, following Jesus Christ plays a significant role in supporting recovery. Faith
in God allows individuals to transcend suffering through belief and hope, leading to
lasting recovery.
