The article centres on the need for
cooperation between educational institutions
and between the growers and processors
of food in the local environment. The
cooperation of educational institutions with
farmers in food procurement and in visiting
farms indicates the importance of physical
and social proximity. In Slovenia the School
Scheme project is being implemented,
with support from the European Union.
Some school kitchens have used green
public contracts as a chance to collaborate
with local growers. In some places the
experiences gained under the Organic
School Gardens programme have been
received enthusiastically – with the proper
organization, this programme supports the
education of “a new consumer”, provides
opportunities for the development of
innovative outdoor classrooms and mor
