We live in an era of globalization, the blurring of borders, and multiculturalism, which is why it is very important to explore the social theme of the national spirit in contemporary art, especially the art of smaller nations and ethnic groups. The central questions are how this is reflected in the context of their artistic work, historical heritage as well as in the forms of mythological stories, religion and fairy tales and how we perceive this art through the prism of our cultural education and the modern world. In the thesis, I investigate the art practices of modern artists, and at the same time analyze their meaning, causes and assumptions. I study literature on cultural identity and national creators, their beliefs and contributions to contemporary art. On the basis of my findings, I intend to create works through which I could reflect themes of identity and self-determination and express my words about my people – the Kalmyks, Oirats or western Mongolians - in contemporary art.
