In recent years, surround sound reproduction has evolved from traditional systems to more affordable solutions due to the widespread use of mobile devices. This provides users with a high level of auditory spatial realism, regardless of where they are. The quality of three-dimensional sound has become one of the most important factors in evaluating the final user experience. Audio engineers still face challenges such as accurately representing sound sources, adapting to individual differences between listeners and integrating the technology into online platforms.
The aim of the master's thesis was to develop a web application for testing the quality of surround sound reproduction in the browser using the JavaScript Web Audio API library. The thesis deals with the process of developing the application, presents the most important functions of the before mentioned library and summarizes the psychological aspects of spatial auditory perception as well as the technical aspects of capturing and reproducing spatial sound. The analysis of the collected test results sheds light on the key areas where further work is needed to improve the quality of surround sound reproduction in a web browser.
