Optimization of shipping routes with AIS data

Efficient management of ship traffic is crucial for ensuring sustainable and timely maritime operations, minimizing congestion, and reducing environmental impact. Automatic Identification System (AIS) data has emerged as a valuable resource for monitoring and analysing ship movements. In this study, we propose a combined methodology for estimating ship energy consumption, identifying bottlenecks in ship traffic and optimizing their flow using AIS data. The first step involves collecting and preprocessing AIS data from multiple sources to obtain a comprehensive view of ship movements within a specific region or waterway. To analyse the emissions on a larger scale, through a larger time frame, a combination of macroscopic approaches has been undertaken using AIS data aggregates. Additionally, a microscopical methodology combining a conventional energy consumption model and a support vector machine-based approach was proposed to study energy demand of tugboats. During manoeuvres tugboat average power demand difference between lowest and highest values was nearly 200%, indicating average errors on the learning and test sets of 18 and 31% consequently yielded much better estimates. Potential electrification of the fleet was analysed and results show it would result in yearly decrease of tugboat CO2 emissions from 495.42 tonnes to 277.32 tonnes. A case study area for feasibility of introducing electric tugboats and macroscopic traffic overview is the Port of Koper, located in the North-Adriatic area that includes reasonably dense ship traffic, with separation zones and several ports receiving the largest container ships.
