Beside public and commercial, there is also community radio, which enriches the media world. Its content is originally intended, adjusted and focused on specific community and is often ignored by other media. They are normally managed and formed by representatives of the community, who are often volunteers and lay people. One of such media is also WWOZ 90.7 FM New Orleans, a radio station that was formed in 1980 as a platform for thepreservation and dissemination of New Orleans music and cultural heritage. Today, the radio is one of the most popular community radio stations in the United States and the world, with 18 employees, stable donors, loyal listeners and volunteers, and it represents one of the largest cultural institutions in the city. In this thesis, I research the history of the medium, external influences on it, such as the arrival of the Internet, Hurricane Katrina, the change of leadership, but above all his place in the community and their mutual influence.
