The article presents the possibilities of using the Ecological Footprint Calculator in education, in particular with the aim of developing competences for sustainable development. Although the empirical research took place in a higher education setting (geography students at the University of Ljubljana in Slovenia), in an adapted form the described approach to dealing with individual’s pressures on the environment and ways of reducing them can be transferred to primary and secondary school practice. Most participants identified the ecological footprint as an important contribution to education for sustainable development.
