Undergraduate thesis focuses on the theme of otherness in the literary works Stone Butch Blues by Leslie Feinberg and Zami: A New Spelling of My Name by Audre Lorde. I analyse otherness through the aspects of sexual orientation, identity, and race, on the basis of which the characters in both works are subject to discrimination or feel different to others. Feinberg's main character is a working-class gender non-conforming lesbian, while Lorde's main focus is on her own story as a black lesbian. Then I describe the tensions in the American lesbian communities from the 1950s to 1970s, followed by an analysis of how both authors show otherness in their works. Finally, I show how their treatment of otherness in these two works connects to the authors' beliefs, for example to intersectional feminism.
