Maritime transport is considered the most important in the global exchange of goods. Container transport and the activities associated with it are on the increase. The rapid growth of cargo handling means that ports are facing new challenges. Good hinterland connections and terminals within the continent are crucial for reducing congestion and eliminating bottlenecks in ports. Intermodality has redefined the importance of the hinterland for ports. Numerous ports are investing in rail connections to the hinterland, including the Slovenian port. They want to ensure capacities for the expected transhipment demand.
The theoretical part of the diploma describes the operation of hinterland terminals and ports and their interdependence. The second part refers to the situation in the Slovenian port. It also presents the investments with which the port intends to maintain and further increase its cargo throughput. However, if the port only invests in development and neglects the hinterland, it may not achieve the desired growth. Currently, the development of the Slovenian port is also supported by state policy through the construction of a second railway line on the Divača - Koper route. The paper also discusses hinterland and maritime connections in port operations. For a better understanding, one section focuses on the cooperation between the port of Koper and hinterland terminals throughout Europe.
