The thesis presents the forest cover of the Republic of Slovenia, and the potential, use,
and ecological significance of biomass heating in the Republic of Slovenia. The
differences between wood heating and wood pellet heating are described in detail. The
thesis also introduces the IKA C200 calorimetric system, which is used to determine the
calorific value of selected samples. For the analysis of wood, we selected air-dried beech
wood and air-dried spruce wood as samples. For the analysis of wood pellets, we selected
samples of spruce pellets and beech pellets. The main goal of the thesis was to compare
the results of the sample analyses and to classify the samples into quality grades. The
samples were analyzed for ash content, moisture content, volatile matter content, and
calorific value. All measurements and analyses were conducted in the Laboratory at the
Faculty of Natural Sciences and Engineering, University of Ljubljana, Department of
Materials and Metallurgy. The final results and comparisons between samples are
summarized in a table 8.
