Naslov:At death's door: Conceptual plan of a hospice in the area of the former City Children's Hospital inLjubljana
Izvleček:
Palliative care, i.e. the relief of terminal patients’ symptoms and physical, spiritual or psychological suffering, is a fundamental right. In Slovenia, palliative care is still not systematically regulated, and is particularly lacking in terms of hospice care, which is one of the most established and comprehensive forms of caring for the dying and providing support to their relatives. The current capacity of our only national hospice cannot cater to the growing need for integrated care for the dying. The Master’s thesis addresses the issue of designing a hospice that could address this shortfall. Drawing on my own experience of the death of my father and my stay in the hospital room at Ulica stare pravde, I question the possible forms of collective living within the institution and ask myself how to listen to the physical, psychosocial and spiritual needs of the dying and their relatives through the design of the space? I place the hospice in an urban environment, linking its users to their surroundings and vice versa; the hospice becomes part of the urban fabric, and the variety of settings and their interplay, both within the building and in the garden, allow for different uses for all its users. The thesis raises new questions, in particular: how to design a hospice that ensures privacy for the dying while being open to the public? When is a hospice too big? How to organise the living units to meet the needs of the dying and their relatives at the same time? What kind of building do I want to die in? What kind of hospice should it be so that it is neither a hospital nor a home and it is both? Where should the hospice be located so that its residents - who are still alive! - are not cut off from the world?
