This master’s thesis addresses the causes, consequences and prevention of a burnout in the workplace.
The theoretical part of the thesis includes characterization of a burnout in the workplace and a description of its process. It includes the causes for a workplace burnout, the influence of employees’ personality characteristics, the signs and symptoms of a burnout, the consequences, and ways of prevention linked to an individual and an organisation. As the reviewed literature shows, workplace burnout is a major social problem, which needs to be limited and prevented. The consequences of a burnout are as negative for an individual, as for an entire organisation, which is why various preventive measures are being taken, based on the prevention of a burnout in the workplace.
In the empirical part of the master’s thesis, we have conducted qualitative research through a semi-structured interview. The sample included four individuals, employed in different workplaces. We were interested in the most common causes of a burnout in the workplace, how a burnout affects the health and productivity on the employees, and how can and an individual and an organisation contribute to the prevention of a workplace burnout.
