Adam Skalar's manuscript is an important work from the Catholic restoration that fills out the apparently modest collection of Slovenian theological and literary works in this period. Skalar's codex includes two translations titledShulla tiga premishluuana (School of Contemplation) and Exemplar od Suetiga Bonauentura (The Exemplar of Saint Bonaventure), as well as the essaysVsakdanie spomishlane vernih karshanskich dushiz (Everyday Reflections of Devout Christian Souls) and Vselai inu nikoli, to ie vezhnost (Always and Never: That Is Eternity). The second translation (i.e., Exemplar) is dated December 1643. Codicological analysis of the manuscript has shown that paper from the same manufacturer was used in all the works, indicating that the first, second, and fourth documents in this codex were written around the same time. With these two translations, Skalar made two new contributions to the Slovenian literature of that time: meditative prose (Shulla tiga premishluuana) and philosophical speculation transferred to a literary context (Exemplar od Suetiga Bonauentura). Shulla tiga premishluuana is a translation of an essay by German Franciscan Ioannes Wolff, the second part of his book Schuel der Betrachtung (School of Contemplation). The second of Skalar's translations is based on the German translation or adaptation of a Latin essay by Saint Bonaventure. The German original that Skalar used is titled Breuiloquium Sancti Bonaventurae. Das ist ein Exemplar und Vorbild deß Menschlichen Lebens (Breviloquium by Saint Bonaventure: An Exemplar and Model of Human Life). Although he used Germanisms and Upper Carniolan dialect features, these two translations prove that Skalar was familiar with the Protestant tradition of the standard language and a skillful translator.
