The need to compile monolingual explanatory dictionaries is a result of the broadening of the semantic potential of the existing vocabulary, as well as of the emergence of domestic and foreign neologisms. This paper presents the phases involved in presenting new meanings of existing vocabulary, and of meanings of new lexical items in general, in the explanatory dictionary of Slovene which is in the process of being compiled. Bearing in mind how words are used, their metonymic and metaphoric potential, as well as the fact that the linguistic-discursive functions of the language are expanding, it seems that both terminologisation and determinologisation encourage broader terminological use of established terms in other specialised areas.
