Abandonment of farmland use and consequently its overgrowth is a serious problem in
Slovenia. Slovenia is a very wooded country with 60 % of its land being forest. We have
very limited farmland that is appropriate for mechaical growing of grass and even less
for modern growing of plants for human consumption. Slovenia is not 100 % self
sufficient with most agricultural produces. Self sufficiency can fall, if we keep losing
our farmland due to the abandonment of traditional use and overgrowth. Land
overgrowth prevention is important from multible angles, like preservation of cultural
landscapes and its diversity, preservation of workplaces in the countryside and to secure
food safety. Identification of overgrowing farmlands is important for its monitoring.
That way we can spread out forces and resources from agricutural policy measures to
reduce overgrown farmland. The aim of this thesis is to research what are the causes for
land abandonment and consequently its overgrowth, to find ways how to prevent this
and to find possibilities for proper future use, to prevent future overgrowth.
