The research deals with Functionally Devalued Areas (FDA) of the Koroška region, where 54
FDA are recorded in 2023. With the help of field work, we described the characteristics of the
FDA, and by comparing the conditions between years 2017, 2020 and 2023, we analyzed
various spatial processes. We have described the basic characteristics of the FDA and the
functions that the considered areas have had over time up to the present day. We note that
rapid and numerous changes have been taking place in the FDA in recent years. The biggest
positive spatial changes are reflected in the revived FDA, of which there are 20 in Koroška
region. Among the revived areas, the FDA of trade and services dominate, followed by the FDA
of transitory use, the FDA of infrastructure, and the FDA of industry, crafts and storage. We
have analyzed and presented various successful and less successful processes of renovation
and revitalization in more details. We found out which factors most often affect recovery, or
which factors inhibit it. We compared the FDA of Koroška region with the situation in Slovenia
and identified some regional peculiarities, while recognizing similar processes and challenges
in the revival of the FDA. With the help of interviews with spatial planning stakeholders, we
upgraded the understanding of FDA in the region, and by conducting surveys in the wider area
of three selected FDA we determined how the local population perceives FDA, whether they
bother them and what are their visions of development for abandoned areas in the vicinity of
their residences.
