Every writer’s style, language and their attitude of the world are characterised by the influence of various factors, such as cultural, historical, social and individual ones. Another important aspect to consider is the environment in which the writer lived and worked, or how the characteristics of a particular area are reflected in their literature. Regional syntax involves the use of those syntactic elements (e.g. word order, sentence structures) that are characteristic of a particular region and are as such most often not included in the description of the syntactic elements of the Slovene standard language.With the exception of some studies (cf. Skubic 1984, Ožbot 2005 and Pogorelec 2011), this subject has not been studied in detail.
The aim of the master’s thesis is to investigate how regional syntax determines the word order of two selected writers from the Primorska region, namely France Bevk and Boris Pahor. On the basis of a textual analysis of selected excerpts from shorter and longer prose works of the two authors, it was found that both writers’ word order is influenced by Italian, and that some examples show that the word order differs from the expected word order of standard Slovene.
