In one way or another, the Republic of Slovenia is strongly marked by the alpine world, which evidently influences various functional and cultural dimensions of everyday Slovenian life. Among these dimensions, there is also a military one. The beginnings of military mountaineering in Slovenia coincide with the historical origin and development of military mountaineering in other countries of the Alpine region. As a result of the mountainous relief, all military organizations on the Slovenian ethnic territory in the period of recent history developed certain capacities for mountain warfare. The research starting point of the master's thesis is the dilemma of whether military mountaineering has become part of the Slovenian military identity due to its continuous presence in Slovenia, and how it is as such reflected within the Slovenian Armed Forces. The analysis, based on the study of collected primary, secondary and tertiary sources and the quantitative research method of online survey, has shown that the tradition of military mountaineering is valued quite positively among the members of the Slovenian Armed Forces, and this means that it meets an important requirement to be considered as a significant part of the Slovenian military identity.
