Toporišič's reflections on Slovene verbal aspect and its description represent a relatively small, but not negligible proportion of his extensive linguistic oeuvre. Two of the significant developments in the description of verbal aspect as a grammatical category are its separation from Aktionsart and the definition of grammatical meaning of the perfective in relation to imperfective verbs. Although the term aspectual pair is frequently used by Toporišič, it remains undefined until his work Encyclopaedia of the Slovene Language.
