The European Union's need to establish a common migration and asylum policy resulted in the establishment of the Frontex agency, the main objective of which was to coordinate between member states on the issues of migration and border control. Since 2016, a new approach to border management has formed. This new approach, a culmination of legal and de facto actions, could be summarized under the umbrella term “Fortress Europe”. This new approach in essence meant a complete closing of borders for anyone who chooses to enter European Union irregularly, regardless of their right of asylum. On the other hand, this new approach coincided with increasing difficulty of utilising any legal channels to get into the European Union. This approach has resulted in the increase in danger for those who enter the EU without valid legal permission in the form of a visa. As an agency, Frontex suffers from the lack of judicial and political control. This often results in human rights violations for those attempting to enter the European Union. The “Fortress Europe” approach and the goals and tactics of Frontex are not entirely aligned with the European charter of human rights, nor the basic principles of the European Union.
