Abstract

Title:The Formation of Slovenian Terminology in the Field of Natural History in the 19th Century
Abstract:
This master's thesis focuses on the formation of Slovenian terminology in the field of natural history in the 19th century. First, it describes cultural and political developments, the Slovenian school system, and the status of Slovenian in primary and secondary schools in the 19th century. Next, it presents the reasons why it was necessary to start including Slovenian not only as a subject but also as a language of instruction, as well as how the first translations of natural history textbooks from German into Slovenian influenced this important change. It also describes the biographical backgrounds of Ivan Tušek and Fran Erjavec, who translated natural history textbooks and thereby helped shape standard Slovenian. The general process of the formation of Slovenian terminology in the second half of the 19th century is also outlined, as well as the critical role played in this by Matej Cigale. This is followed by an analysis of selected natural history terms, presenting their evolution over time and the translation strategies that were used in shaping them.
