From the Moodle course regarding the README file:
The README file is a text file that contains information about one or more digital objects and is typically distributed together with them. It is primarily intended for human users (Terminological dictionary of open science ).
The README file is a basic descriptive document that provides the following information:
- what the research data represent,
- how they were created,
- how they can be correctly interpreted and used,
- which limitations and rights apply,
- how to reproduce or cite the data.
It is recommended to create the file in .txt format, which can be opened by any file viewer.
Recommended structure of a README file:

- title of the research data,
- brief description (what the research data represent),
- research purpose or context,
- authors or research team,
- date of data collection or creation,
- links to the project or related publications.
- Description of data content:
- list of all folders and files,
- brief description of each file (e.g. .csv, .xlsx, .fasta, .tiff),
- explanation of columns, variables, or attributes,
- information on measurement units, encoding, and categories.
- Methodology of data collection, creation, and processing:
