This master's thesis is mainly focused on proper names and their translations in the fantasy novel The Blade Itself by novelist Joe Abercrombie. The purpose of this thesis is to establish how proper names are translated into Slovene, which translation strategies are used, what influences the choice of strategy, and to what extent the translator follows the original text. The theoretical part briefly introduces genre and fantasy literature, their characteristics as well as the attitude towards them. Furthermore, it includes the creation of worlds and cultures in fantasy literature as well as methods used to translate the latter. The theoretical part also addresses proper names in fantasy literature and strategies used for their translation. Before the analysis, the author, his work, and translator Sergej Hvala are presented. The analysis of proper names and their translations is focused mainly on the fact that all proper names are either semantically or culturally motivated, and on the potential influence of motivation on translation. Additionally, it brings forward the fact that the translator is at the same time a reader and an interpreter who recreates the fantasy world with their own view of it.
