This article examines syllable duration in Slovenian from the point of view of a speaker of a pitch-accent language. To Japanese speakers, the word Ljubljana somehow sounds four-syllabic. A tonal analysis confirms that there are in fact four tones, which should influence the recognition of the pronunciation. This kind of »sensitivity« is not only related to the fact that Japanese is a language in which pitch-accent has a semantically distinctive function, but also to the fact that it is a mora-counting language. The approach using the mora concept could have the potential to broaden research on syllable duration in Slovenian linguistics.
