Professional workers in primary schools meet students from different socio-economic backgrounds on a daily basis. Almost every sixth child in 2021 is exposed to life below the poverty line, which means that such professionals are often exposed to the challenges of mitigating the risk of social exclusion.
In the first part of my master's thesis, I presented the concept of socio-economic status and its influence on social situation in Slovenia. Since either low or high socio-economic status affects the child's development and subsequent social integration and success in school, I also presented the socio-economic status in connection with the individual's family. Due to frequent encounters with students from different social and economic backgrounds, it is important to emphasize the phenomenon of social exclusion and the role of professionals who help children to be included and more successful, regardless of the environment in which they live.
In my research work, I focused on the frequency of meetings of professionals with students from families with low socio-economic status, I was interested in the areas that are affected by socio-economic status and how professionals perceive the differences between the parents from different environments. Through research, I found that there are significant differences between parents, depending on the environment in which they live. I also focused on the main factors of social exclusion in the school environment, the relationship between students and the methods and techniques used by professionals to help social integrate children.
