When did music videos emerge? Are music videos merely a form of short films, or do they fall into their own category? Are music videos just commercials for musicians or do they go beyond advertising? What are the differences between music videos made before music television MTV and those made during the time of MTV and later? How to decode music videos? How to make a music video?
In following thesis I tried to answer these questions by relying on the acclaimed theorists Andrew Goodwin and Carol Vernallis, whose work I studied and analysed in detail.
The theoretical part is followed by a description of the process of making a music video, which I created for the song Satelit by the Slovenian band Matter. This part of the thesis is corroborated by findings I reached while researching on and analysing the music video theory. In this way, I strive to prove that the theory on music videos contributes to the quality of music video conceptualization.
