This master's thesis is dedicated to the analysis of the characteristics of Venezuelan version of Spanish in telenovela Mi gorda bella (in English translation My Sweet Fat Valentina). With the appearance of telenovelas and the rise in popularity they have had, different variants of Spanish have been introduced to the world. The purpose of this work is to present the Venezuelan variant of Spanish, from several linguistic aspects. The theoretical part of the master's thesis firstly presents the origin, history, and characteristics of American and Venezuelan Spanish. Afterwards, some of their most prominent linguistic features following the established theoretical findings are described in more detail. Additionally, the thesis presents the emergence of telenovelas in Latin America and the associated phenomenon of “neutral Spanish”. The empirical part of the master's thesis contains an analysis of the lexicological, morphosyntactic and phonetic-phonological characteristics of the dialogues of telenovela Mi gorda bella with a focus on the characteristics of (spoken) Venezuelan Spanish. A short glossary with some examples of typical and frequently used Venezuelan words and expressions can also be found therein. The purpose of the telenovela analysis is to show the reader, through examples of the spoken language, both distinguishing and shared elements of colloquial and everyday Spanish used in Venezuela vis-à-vis other variants of American Spanish.
