The article presents the difficulties faced by a researcher in determining the phonological forms of the 16th century literary Slovene words, especially loanwords, when it is assumed that Slovene writers observed foreign spelling norms that do not reflect the phonological values of the foreign words. Typical examples are German initial <sp->, <st-> (with phonological values /ʃp-/, /ʃt-/) and <ei>, <eu> (/aɪ/, /ɔʏ/) that are sometimes used also in 16th century Slovene words.
