A comparative analysis of ten different models of first language essays at the »baccalaureate« showed that the Slovene model is the only one that does not include poetry. In the article, I propose that the essay part of the matura exam in Slovene should also include poetry as a literary genre with specific characteristics. Although the reader uses strategies for reading narrative prose (such as narrativisation) when reading poetry, in school practice it is important to shed light on the characteristics that are specific to poetry, for example the metrical form, the stylistic means of expression, the abstract liberation of words from their meaning, the creation of ambience or different emotional states by linguistic means.
