Prikazovanje moralne dileme v resničnostnem šovu Toddlers & Tiaras : diplomsko delo

Resničnostni šov Toddlers & Tiaras spremlja mlade nadobudne lepotne tekmovalke in tekmovalce tako med pripravami na lepotna tekmovanja, kot tudi na samih tekmovanjih. Gledalcu omogoča vpogled v »zakulisje« tako življenj tekmovalk kot lepotnih tekmovanj; prikazana je zgodba tekmovalcev, njihovi razlogi za sodelovanje in njihova družinska dinamika. Žanr resničnostne televizije je bil skozi leta predmet raznolikih preučevanj, tako iz vidika produkcije in diskurzov, ki se tvorijo znotraj te, kot z vidika občinstva, ki resničnostno televizijo spremlja. Ena znamenitejših značilnosti resničnostne televizije je njena moč vzbuditi moralno dilemo in obsodbo v očeh občinstva, kar pa deluje kot gorivo, ki drži ljudi prikopane na ekrane. Cilj naloge je bil ugotoviti kako je v šovu Toddlers & Tiaras reprezentirana moralna dilema, kako so reprezentirani odnosi med starši in tekmovalkami ter kako so reprezentirani odnosi med staršema tekmovalk. S pomočjo skrbno izbranih elementov multimodalne analize sem izvedla analizo dveh študijskih primerov v obliki posnetkov, ki jih šov objavlja na uradnem YouTube kanalu. Izbrana posnetka sem prepoznala kot primerna na podlagi starostne skupine, v katero spadata prikazani centralni tekmovalki, zaradi števila ogledov in dejstva, da je celoten format šova v Sloveniji nedostopen. Znotraj primerov sem analizo osredotočila na reprezentacijo konceptov otrokocentrizma, performativnosti ženskosti in hiperseksualizacije, saj sem predpostavljala, da ti pripomorejo k reprezentaciji moralne dileme. Iz analize je razvidno, da je moralna dilema znotraj šova prednostno reprezentirana, kar pomeni, da sam format šova s svojimi produkcijskimi prijemi ponuja veliko priložnosti za tvorbo moralne dileme.

• Naslov: Displaying moral dilemma in the reality show Toddlers & Tiaras

Izvleček

Reality show Toddlers & Tiaras accompanies young ambitious beauty pageant contestants and their families during the preparations for the beauty pageants as well as the pageants themselves. It gives the viewer a chance to »see behind the curtain« of contestants' lives and the mechanisms behind the pageants. The show displays the contestants' life story, their reason for competing and also their family dynamic. The genre itself has been the subject of numerous researches, from the production point as well as the audience's. Reality TV is mostly known for its ability to spark moral dilemma and moral judgement, which help hold the viewers' attention. The goal of this thesis was to find out how exactly is moral dilemma displayed in the reality show Toddllers & Tiaras, in what way are the relationships between parents and their competing children represented and in what way are represented the relationships between the parents themselves. With the help of carefully chosen elements, mostly used in Multimodal Critical Discourse Analysis, I have conducted an analysis of two study cases. I chose the study cases based on the displayed girls' age group, their popularity and the fact that the show is otherwise unavailable to watch in Slovenia. Within the study cases I have focused my analysis on the representation of the following concepts: child-centredness, performing femininity and hyper sexualisation. I argue that these contribute to representation of moral dilemma. I have concluded that the show is prioritising representation of the moral dilemma with the help of production techniques.
