In the theoretical part of the diploma thesis entitled “Reasons for Choosing a Public or Montessori Kindergarten”, I defined preschool education, its development in Slovenia and the providers of preschool education. I outlined the program which manages the operation of public and Montessori kindergartens, defined the funding for kindergartens, the founder as well as the role of adults in kindergarten. I also touched on the legal rights of parents when choosing a program and during the child's enrolment in kindergarten. In the empirical part of the diploma thesis, I made a survey questionnaire, which was completed by parents of preschool children. I was mainly interested in the reasons why parents decide on a certain kindergarten program, how important is the program during this choice and to what extent are parents aware of their legal right to choose a kindergarten. With the obtained answers or results in the survey questionnaire, I was able to answer the research questions in the empirical part of my diploma thesis.
