The diploma thesis presents the observation of the city heat island on the example of the eight largest
(by area) Slovenian cities: Ljubljana, Maribor, Celje, Kranj, Koper, Velenje, Novo mesto and Ptuj.
The cities are considered in the time series from 1986 to 2018. The determination of the temperature
of the mentioned cities on the basis of Landsat satellite images is described. SUHI (surface urban heat
island) and UHeatEx (urban heat exposure indicator, which takes into account the physical processes
for the formation of the urban heat island) were calculated. The results of the task showed that the
phenomenon of urban heat island is present in Slovenia in both large and small cities. Municipalities
could use the results in urban planning and settlement management, with the aim of reducing the
occurrence of urban heat island.
