My diploma discusses women during World War II in Sežana and the neighbouring villages. This area was under Italian occupation between both wars, which implemented repression of Slovene culture and forced Italianization. After Italian capitulation the area was occupied by German forces, which enforced even larger repression. However, the locals met their occupiers with strong resistance.
With the use of registers, prints and oral sources, the diploma discusses the effect of war on demography in this area. From 1943 to 1945 the number of weddings and baptisms dropped increasingly. Causes of death of women during the war didn’t change much. War also influenced the role of women, who had to take on larger amounts of work due to the absence of men. The diploma also presents their political activities, which enabled them bigger integration into the political sphere. Despite partial emancipation after the war, women still played part in their traditional role, which was presented to them by society. Furthermore, in my diploma I discuss living conditions, eating culture, education of women and types of clothing they wore.
