Propolis is a resin-like mixture produced naturally by worker bees (Apis mellifera). It usually consists of 50 % resin, 30 % wax, 10 % essential oils, 5 % pollen and 5 % of various other substances. Besides many biological effects, it has antibacterial, antifungal and antioxidative properties. We extracted samples of raw propolis with 70% (v/v) ethanol and then analysed its composition with HPLC-DAD and HPLC-ECD. Based on the results of HPLC and PCA analysis, we selected ethanol propolis extract samples for microbiological analysis. Using the microdilution method, we determined minimal inhibitory concentrations of the samples on the bacterial species Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli as well as on the yeast species Candida albicans. For samples of raw brown, red propolis and beeswax we also preformed thermogravimetric analysis together with differential scanning calorimetry.
