Undergraduate thesis focuses on the self-image of a Habsburg nobleman at the end of the Middle Ages and the beginning of the Early Modern period. The increasing spread of Humanism and Renaissance introduced new inventions, development of science, medicine and arts. At the same time, new geographical discoveries have changed the geopolitics of the world. Nobility of the Habsburg lands was also affected by these changes, while at the same time also being a part of them. The first part of the thesis presents the life of the Habsburg nobility and the challenges they faced, with an emphasis on nobility in Carniola. The second part presents the life and work of Sigismund von Herberstein, through which it will reflect how the self-image of a Habsburg nobleman has changed during this period.
