This paper is composed of two parts: the theoretical and the empirical part.
In the theoretical part, I first focused on language development, initial literacy and receiving text development. I continued with the process of narration in kindergarten and briefly described the method of reading chapter books. In the final part, I described why family reading is so important and what parents need to pay attention to. I also wrote a few words about the Slovenian writer Kajetan Kovič as his work titled My Friend Piki Jakob was used in my project.
In the empirical part, I presented how preschool children understand basic literary concepts. By using a checklist, I checked their understanding of basic literary concepts before and after the project. During the project, I followed their spontaneous conversations connected to reading the fairy tale My Friend Piki Jakob; moreover, I evaluated their motivation to listen to the fairy tale and their participation in further activities.
