In the theoretical part of the master's thesis, I explore the time of transition in which the present society and individual is situated in. I begin with the famous Plato's Allegory of the cave that I first present in the context of philosophy, art and science. Then, I analyze the themes that it opens, with additional concepts, such as Lacan's psychoanalytic concept of the mirror stage. Next, I focus on the mirror metaphor, which influenced film and film theory.
The next chapter begins with a reflection on Plato's world of ideas and the role of utopias. With the help of authors such as Hegel, Slavoj Žižek, Frank Ruda, Rosi Braidotti and Immanuel Wallerstein, I think about the trends and the consequences of the capitalist world-system on our life and subjectivity.
In chapter about exiting the capitalist cave I present the reasons for the general disappointment with social revolutions. With the help of Mario Perniola's philosophy of transit I focus on the question of our relation to the change and the issue of freedom. During the discussion, I also include interpretations of films: Conformist, Blade Runner 2049, and Melancholy.
In the last part, I present the development of an animated film, which is structured by a model of Plato's cave. I take a look at the film-narrative concepts that were important for the development of the project.
