The subject of this thesis is the mural painting in the building at Mestni trg 10, Ljubljana, where multiple decorative painted layers and overpaints have been discovered. The ceiling in one of the rooms in the building’s second storey was found to be unstable, which necessitated the detachment of the painting. The first part of the thesis thus deals with the problem of detaching the painting, including communicating and negotiating compromises with the building owners. The part that follows describes the detachment process itself, as well as the procedures associated with construction and conservation-restoration works that were subsequently performed on the detached fragment. Individual overpaints were duly documented, but because of the instability of the intermediate paint layers and the thin overpaints, it was the oldest layer that has been chosen for presentation ? a baroque motif featuring a plastically shaded rosette. The painting has been transferred to a new, movable support and finished with decorative mortar. We have performed pointillistic retouching of the damaged and cracked sites, with the repairs gradually built up using lime-based paints and watercolours. The detached ceiling painting has been returned to the owner of the apartment to be displayed in the form of movable wall decoration.
