The article addresses the question of New Testament Canon in relation to its theological, and more specifically, ecclesiological relevance; it especially explores the potential of the Canon to serve as the foundation for unity among Christians nowadays. Given the special circumstances of its emergence, the New Testament Canon appears as the first and most important »ecumenical« decree of the universal Church, and for this reason it has a special relevance and validity. In relation to the Church Tradition the Canon appears as its founding, authoritative and normative part, which on the one hand makes other traditions possible, and on the other also sets their limits. The variety of the New Testament texts further demands that the ecumenical dialogue should strive for unity in diversity.
