This MA thesis, titled Variation of passive and passive-like constructions in Slovene and Italian: analysis of two contemporary novels and their translations, first considers the passive in Slovene and Italian in terms of definition, and the role of passive and passive-like constructions in discourse, both from the contemporary and the historical point-of-view. This is followed by the empirical contrastive analysis of the passive and passive-like structures in Drago Jančar's To noč sem jo videl, its translation into Italian by Veronika Brecelj, and Paolo Giordano's La solitudine dei numeri primi with its translation into Slovene by Anita Jadrič. The point of interest is the typology and the variation of passive and passive-like constructions between the original novels and their translations. In the conclusion, I provide the synthesis and key findings pertaining to a rather under-researched field of contrastive analysis of the passive in Slovene and Italian.
