Ice hockey is one of the fastest and competitive team sports. Today, the separation of professional leagues and players is so small, teams look for any advantage for improvement. Therefore, coaches rely heavily on video analysis and statistics to help in their success.
In this study we analyzed eight Alps Hockey League playoff games. With the help of video analysis, we looked at three separate categories: most scoring chances, in which situations players score the most goals and in which chances players are most efficient. We also took the gathered information and looked at what were the most dangerous areas on the ice to lose possession of the puck and if team efficiency or inefficiency was the main factor in the overall outcome of the game.
Teams created the most goal scoring chances from offensive zone plays and straight attack plays. Also, the most goals scored were from offensive zone plays and straight attack plays. Chances that were most likely to result in a goal (most efficient) were rebounds, breakaways and odd man rush plays. The most fatal area on the ice to lose possession of the puck was in the teams defensive zone. This area of the ice resulted in the most goals scored against after losing possession. Teams that created the most scoring chances statistically won most of the games. However, we can´t say that outcome of other games relied solely on teams efficiency or inefficiency, as there are many other factors that influence the game.
