The Master’s Thesis is based on the conservation-restoration process of the painting The Thron of Grace. The thesis’ subject matter is the description of the painting’s condition and the selection of suitable materials for the conservation and restoration.
The painting was painted in oil on canvas technique by an unknown painter. After restoration, the painting will be returned to the Parish church of Saint George and Euphemia in Rovinj. The church is exposed to large changes in relative humidity. This fact was taken into consideration when choosing suitable materials for the intervention. Before the conservation-restoration, the painting was in a very bad condition - the varnish was darkened, the canvas was loosened, there were parts of paint missing. Also, it was heavily overpainted.
Before the actual intervention started, we made very precise plan of the procedures. Tests for solubility of the varnish and overpaints were made to determine appropriate materials for the process. Because of the instability of the paint and ground layers, it was necessary to consolidate and to line the painting. The lacunas were filled and retouched. I explained each conservation-restoration process, added a list of materials, cited the dilemmas in choice of materials, and documented all the procedures using photography and written word.
