Freeze-drying is a complex process of drying the solution with the use of freezing, sublimation and desorption. The product lyophilisate is a dry material in the shape of a porous cake. For the analysis of the heat and mass transfer during freeze-drying, quality data about the size, shape and distribution of lyophilisate's pores is required. Analysis of the SEM pictures of the cake's surface was performed with the use of ImageJ software. Size and the arrangement of the pores were taken into account. The used software, ImageJ, is appropriate for the manual treatment of pictures, while the desired accuracy, with the use of automatic determination of the pore borders with discussed baseline assumptions, was unable to be reached, mainly because of the surface complexity.
