The diploma thesis discusses the role and meaning of speech as a rhetorical strategy within the theory of narrative and analyses the correlation between narration and speech. The thesis is focused on a specific situation of speech in the novel, i.e. on the moment when speech is interrupted or blocked. Six contemporary Slovene novels, which show an increase in the share of speech or its significance for narration, were analysed. The interruptions of speech in the novels demonstrate the power relations amongst literary characters (Berta Bojetu, Filio ni doma), establish the space of intimacy and migrate from the field of utterance to perception (Marko Sosič, Balerina, Balerina), shape the interior of the narrator (Stanka Hrastelj, Igranje), function as a means of characterization of literary characters through language (Goran Vojnović, Čefurji raus!), reflect on narration (Brina Svit, Con Brio) and contribute to the deautomatization of narration (Maruša Krese, Da me je strah?).
