Introduction: Infertility is a condition where a couple does not get pregnant after one year of regular and unprotected sexual intercourse. It is a very psychologically painful condition that influences several views of a person’s life. Among them can truncated sexual intercourse since due to the inability to get pregnant sexual intercourse can lose its meaning, which can cause sexual issues and dysfunctions. Purpose: The purpose of this dissertation was to study – based on specialized and scientific literature – how infertility affects the sexual intercourse of a couple, how often infertile couples deal with sexual dysfunctions and how infertility affects sexual satisfaction. With help of analyzed chosen research the author of this dissertation has tested set research claims and sought answers to research questions. Method: The method is descriptive with a revision of scientific and specialized literature as well as meta-synthesis of scientific research of the discussed problem. The search for the suitable literature has been carried out with the help of several search engines and research databases, namely COBISS, DiKUL, Medline, CINAHL, PubMed and ScienceDirect. The following keywords have been used: infertility, sexual intercourse, sexual dysfunctions, and infertile couple. The studied literature for the theoretical part has been limited from 2004 to 2017. The assimilation criteria, on which the author chose the research for meta-synthesis, have been based on cases between years 2012 and 2017. Results: The study of the chosen research has shown that despite some occasional contradictory results infertility negatively affects the sexual intercourse of an infertile couple, which is further proven by a pretty high percentage of sexual dysfunctions (women: 43,3–90 %; men: 48–58 %) and lesser sexual satisfaction. Discussion and conclusion: The meta-synthesis proves that infertility is a big risk factor in dealing with sexual dysfunctions. Therefore, it would be needed sexuality in the treatment of infertile couple to pay more attention. In order for the health workers to be able to offer more expert guidance and support, more quality studies and additional education need to be carried out and provided in Slovenia that would substantiate the knowledge of medical experts.
