Voluntary political participation means communication and cooperation between citizens and holders of political power without obligation. The right to vote is one of the fundamental political rights that citizens exercise directly and indirectly. Young people in Slovenia enter politics in various ways, but their turnout in indirect elections is still low. This issue has been increasing over the course of history due to many reasons that affect the political apathy of young people. Every year, however, Slovenia carries out public opinion surveys, in the field of these issues, and the results show low participation rates and an apathetic attitude of young people in relation to politics, but these results are only informative, and at the same time, they are difficult to access.
The purpose is therefore to identify the causes that discourage young people from participating in the elections and allow all young people and other citizens to view the results gathered in one place, while at the same time raising their interest in the world of politics and greater electoral turnout.
The reasons for the political apathy of young people and possible solutions were studied, using statistical tests based on the answers of participants in the survey questionnaire. Based on the research, the following was found: young people do not trust the functioning of government authorities and institutions, they understand the notion of direct democracy better than complex electoral systems, and social media is their main source of information in the field of politics, which are the main reasons for low voter turnout among young people. The study found that young people do not consider compulsory electoral participation as a solution to the given issue. The findings are an informative tool intended for young people, other citizens, and political representatives to learn about the problem and begin to solve it.
