This master's dissertation deals with poor walkability of school districts. Dissertation deals with walkability in general, and more detailed with the selected school district in Celje. Children all over the world and also in Slovenia are due to lack of physical activity of poorer motoric and physical skills, there are more diseases, associated with the problem and due to lack of independence, children suffer from psychological and social problems, learning concentration and consequently learning success are worse. There is a main focus on designing the open space in a way that promotes children's independent and safe walk to school. The hypothesis is that walkability of school districts in Celje is poor, and that with proper design with an emphasis on walkability and urban greenery, it is possible to create a safer, healthier and more pleasant place for children to walk to school. In the dissertation, the problem is theoretically studied through literature and the hypothesis checked by analysing the area. According to the results of spatial analysis and knowledge gained from the literature, the concept of open space in this school district, based on its walkability is designed.
