There are few government institutions and many voluntary organisations in Slovenia which keep control over the management of pets. Legal responsibility has the veterinary inspection, which is under Ministry of agriculture, forestry and food. Animals that are confiscated in court process are put in animal shelters. Animal shelters also provide care for lost and abandoned animals, spreading knowledge and neutering stray animals. Voluntary organisations are a medium through which people spread information, raise funds and collect complaints that are later forwarded to veterinary inspection. Where animal abuse or neglect is urgent, police can take action, even traffic wardens have some jurisdictions. If veterinarian sees suspicious injuries or the behaviour of a pet is unusual, he/she has to question the owner about it and if necessary forward the case to an inspector.
